War Horse Quiz

Read the passage, then answer the questions. The passage is an original scene about a horse serving during wartime; it is not from War Horse.

A Night Crossing

Rain tapped against the canvas as Joey stood beside Topthorn in a muddy field. The two horses had been ordered to pull a supply wagon to a village across the river. Their driver, Tom, checked the harness and spoke quietly to them. “Steady now,” he said. “We’ll take the old stone bridge.” At the bridge, the river rushed below. One wooden plank had come loose, leaving a dark gap. Joey shied backwards at the sudden splash of water. Topthorn stayed still, ears pricked forward. Tom climbed down, found a spare board on the wagon and wedged it into the gap. He tested it with his boot, then led the horses forward one careful step at a time. Halfway across, a distant boom rolled over the hills. Joey trembled, but Topthorn kept walking. Feeling the steady pull of the harness beside him, Joey followed. The wagon reached the far bank safely. Tom gave each horse a drink and rubbed the rain from their necks. In the village, the soldiers unloaded blankets and tins of food. A little girl brought the horses a handful of carrots. Joey lowered his head to take one. For a moment, the noise of the war seemed far away. On the journey back, Joey walked close to Topthorn, less afraid than before.
