Whakapapa Family Tree

Read the story and study the family tree. Then answer the questions. The people are fictional; you may use their whānau for every activity.

Hana is visiting her cousin Tane in a hospital ward. Tane has made a family tree to show how his whānau are connected. His kuia is Mere, and his koroua is Wiremu. Their child is Tane’s mother, Mele. Mele and her partner, Rangi, are Tane’s parents. Tane has an older sister, Kiri, and a younger brother, Arjun.

Use this family tree to answer Questions 1–5. Mele and Rangi are Tane’s parents. Mere and Wiremu are Mele’s parents.

Remember: whānau means family. In this story, matua means father and whaea means mother. Kuia means grandmother; koroua means grandfather. Tuakana is an older sibling, and teina is a younger sibling.
