The Wombat and the Stew

On a warm afternoon, a hungry dingo spotted a wombat near a creek. “Wombat stew will make a splendid dinner!” he said. He carried the wombat to his camp and placed a large pot over the fire. The wombat was not hurt, but she was worried. When the dingo turned away to collect firewood, she slipped behind a clump of reeds and hid. A platypus paddled past. The dingo asked what would make his stew tasty. “Try some smooth creek mud,” suggested the platypus. The wombat heard this and quietly stirred a handful of mud into the pot. Next, an echidna wandered by. “A few crunchy bugs might improve it,” said the echidna. The wombat added bugs while the dingo looked for a spoon. Then an emu came striding over. “Add prickly leaves for a real bush flavour,” the emu advised. The wombat dropped in some leaves. At last, the dingo returned and sniffed the bubbling pot. His nose wrinkled. “That smells dreadful!” he cried. He hurried off to find something else to eat. As soon as he was gone, the wombat came out from the reeds and made her way safely home. The animals had helped her escape by giving the stew such unappetising ingredients.
