The Door Beneath the Roots
Mila was following a line of ants across the garden when a white rabbit hurried past. It wore a blue waistcoat and held a pocket watch. “Oh crumbs! The moon gate closes at sunset!” it cried, before ducking beneath an old pōhutukawa tree. Mila pulled aside a curtain of roots and found a little wooden door. A brass plate read: TURN THE LEAF KEY ONCE. A silver key shaped like a fern leaf lay on the ground. Mila turned it, and the door clicked open. Beyond it stretched a garden filled with glowing blue flowers and a stream that ran uphill. A small sign beside the doorway said, “Visitors may enter, but the path changes whenever someone tells a lie.” Mila stepped through. The rabbit had vanished. She noticed three stepping stones across the stream. One was marked TRUE, one FALSE and one MAYBE. A bright red apple rested on the far bank. Mila wondered which stone would take her safely across. Then she remembered the sign. “I am a little nervous,” she said honestly. The stones gave a soft chime, and the TRUE stone glowed. Mila crossed carefully and picked up the apple. Behind her, the door stayed open. From somewhere among the flowers, the rabbit called, “Good thinking! The next clue is inside the apple!”
