Help the skate park crew prepare a clear, correctly spelt event notice. Read each task carefully. Use Australian spelling.

Word parts at the skate park

Amira, Jarrah and Anh are making signs for a skate park event. Word roots and affixes can help them spell unfamiliar words.

1.A sign says “telephone check-in”. Which Greek root in telephone means “far” or “distant”? Choose the correct root.

2.Match each root to its meaning: port, spect, geo. Meanings: earth; carry; look or see.

3.Complete the word inspect (to examine closely). Write the missing letter group: in.

Suffixes and spelling changes

The crew is checking the wording on the event notice. Think about how a word changes when a suffix is added.

6.Add the suffix -ian to each word to name a person connected with it. Write the completed word: magic + -ian; library + -ian; electric + -ian.

7.Jarrah writes “happyness” on a sign. Rewrite the word correctly and state the spelling change made when adding -ness to happy.

8.Choose the correct generalisation for adding -ly to a word ending in -le, as in gentle → gently.

Keep the final e and add -ly
Replace the final -le with -ly
Change the final e to i and add -ly
Double the final consonant and add -ly

9.The sign writer needs the word that means “against bacteria”. Complete it with the correct prefix: ____bacterial. Then use the prefix anti- in a different word that means “against” or “opposed to”.

Proofread the event notice
