Zoo Animals Reading Worksheet

Read: Animals Need Room to Roam

People can see wild animals in zoos, but I believe animals should live in the wild whenever it is safe for them. Wild places give animals room to move, stay with their families and find food in their own way. A tiger might travel a long way through a forest to find water or follow a scent. A zoo enclosure is much smaller than the tiger’s natural home. Even with care from people, the tiger cannot roam as freely. Elephants are social animals. In the wild, they may walk with their mothers, sisters and calves. They use sounds and touch to stay close to one another. An elephant kept with very few companions may miss this busy family life. Monkeys climb branches, search for fruit and use their hands to explore. When meals arrive in a dish, they have less chance to practise those natural behaviours. Keepers can add toys and activities, but a zoo cannot be the same as a wide forest. Wildlife films and books can help us learn about animals without keeping them on display. If an animal needs help, a wildlife rescue centre may care for it until it can return to a safe home.
Read the passage carefully. Then answer each question using details from the text.
