Cultural Storytelling Introduction

Some stories are personal memories; some belong to particular cultures or communities and should only be shared by the right people, in the right way. Listen respectfully and ask before retelling someone else’s story.

The old lemon tree

On Sunday, Aunty Jo told Max and Leila a family memory. “When I was little, a strong wind blew lemons from the tree in Gran’s backyard,” she said. “We gathered them in a basket and made lemon cordial together. Gran taught us to take only what we needed and to share the rest with neighbours.” Max and Leila picked a few ripe lemons with an adult. They squeezed the juice, mixed it with water, and carried a jug next door. Their neighbour smiled and brought out a plate of biscuits. Everyone sat under the tree and swapped more happy memories. Aunty Jo said, “This is one of our family stories. You can tell it to our family, but ask me before sharing it with other people.”
