Essay Peer Review Feedback

Read your partner’s essay once for its overall argument, then again to annotate evidence, structure and language. Give feedback that is specific, respectful and useful: name a strength, point to an example, and suggest a practical next step. Do not rewrite the essay for the author.

Review the argument

Use evidence from the essay in each response. If the essay has no paragraph numbers, number the paragraphs together before starting.

1.State the essay’s central contention in your own words. Does the introduction make this contention clear? Explain your judgement.

2.Identify the most convincing point in the essay. Quote or describe the relevant evidence and explain how it supports the contention.

3.Which description best represents an effective line of argument? Select one and give one reason based on the essay.

Each paragraph develops a distinct point that builds towards the contention.
Several paragraphs repeat the same point without extending it.
The paragraphs contain relevant ideas, but their order makes the argument difficult to follow.
The essay’s points do not consistently connect to its contention.

4.Find one place where the writer could develop their reasoning. Name the paragraph or idea, then suggest what explanation, qualification or counterargument would make it more persuasive.

Structure, evidence and style

Focus on a small number of high-impact revisions. Explain the effect of each suggestion on the reader.

5.Which option best describes effective use of evidence in an essay?

Evidence is relevant, introduced clearly and analysed to support the point.
Evidence is relevant, but the writer needs to explain its significance further.
Some evidence is included, but its connection to the point is unclear.
Claims need more reliable or specific evidence.

6.Identify one transition or link between paragraphs that helps the essay flow, or a point where a link is needed. Suggest wording or an idea that would clarify the connection.

7.Copy one sentence that could be clearer, more precise or more formal. Rewrite it while keeping the writer’s meaning, and name the change you made (for example, replacing vague wording or clarifying a clause).

8.Find one language choice worth discussing, such as modality, evaluative language, a complex sentence or a cohesion device. Identify it and explain its effect on tone or meaning.

9.Evaluate the conclusion. Does it synthesise the argument and leave the reader with a clear final insight, or does it mainly repeat earlier points? Give one specific reason.

Make feedback actionable

Complete the final review by prioritising revisions and keeping your comments constructive.

10.Write one feedback comment using this structure: “In paragraph __, your use of __ is effective because __. To strengthen it further, consider __.” Make the comment specific to this essay.

11.Rank the two most important revision priorities for this essay. For each, explain how addressing it would improve the reader’s understanding or confidence in the argument.

12.Write a final note to the author: identify one genuine strength to preserve and one manageable next step for revision. Keep the tone respectful and encouraging.
