Fern and the Little Piglet On Saturday morning, Fern helped her family prepare for a pizza night at their small-town shop. The money would go towards new books for the local library. As Fern carried a box of paper plates out the back door, she heard a soft squeal near the delivery van. A tiny piglet stood beside a stack of crates. It was muddy and shivering. Fern looked around, but no one was nearby. She fetched a clean towel and gently wrapped it around the piglet. Then she filled a shallow bowl with water. “I think it has wandered away from a farm,” Fern said. “We need to keep it safe while we find its owner.” Her dad frowned. “A piglet needs proper care. We can’t just keep it here during pizza night.” Fern nodded. She knew he was right. She asked Jai, who was setting tables, to call the animal shelter. Meanwhile, Fern put a sign near the shop door and asked customers if they knew where the piglet belonged. She stayed beside it, speaking softly so it would not feel frightened. Just before the first pizzas came out of the oven, a farmer hurried into the shop. He had been searching for his missing piglet, Pip. When Pip heard his familiar whistle, its ears perked up and it trotted towards him. The farmer thanked Fern for keeping Pip safe. Fern felt pleased, but a little sorry to see the piglet go. Then she spotted a new customer at the door. “I’ll help with the pizzas now,” she said. “We still have a library to support!”
