📖 Reading Passage

The Great Barrier Reef Adventure

Last summer, Maya and her family travelled 2,400 kilometres from Melbourne to Cairns to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Maya had always dreamed of seeing the colourful coral and tropical fish that lived in Australia's most famous underwater world.

On their first day, Maya put on her snorkelling gear and jumped into the warm water. The temperature was a perfect 26°C! As she swam deeper, she was amazed by what she saw. Bright orange clownfish darted between the coral, whilst green sea turtles glided gracefully through the water. Maya spotted a reef shark in the distance, but her guide explained that reef sharks are harmless to humans.

The most exciting moment came when Maya discovered a giant clam that was over one metre wide! Her underwater camera captured the moment perfectly. Maya's guide told her that the Great Barrier Reef is home to over 1,500 species of fish and 400 types of coral.

By the end of the week, Maya had fallen in love with marine life. She decided that when she grows up, she wants to become a marine biologist to help protect the reef for future generations.
