On a hot afternoon, a shady park can feel much cooler than a bare playground. Trees help by blocking direct sunlight. Their leaves also release water vapour, which can cool the air nearby. At Banksia Park, a council project added six young trees beside the play area in 2023. The trees are still growing, so they do not yet shade the whole playground. A temperature check taken at midday on a sunny day found the ground beneath the trees was 4°C cooler than the nearby open ground. One check cannot show what the temperature will be every day, but it gives a useful comparison. The council chose native trees because they are suited to local conditions. Staff water them during dry periods and check that their guards remain secure. Visitors can help by keeping clear of the young trees and putting rubbish in bins. As the trees grow, their shade may make the play area more comfortable for people and wildlife.
