A Morning at Silver Bay Last Saturday, our local youth group joined a beach clean-up at Silver Bay. We met beside the surf club at eight o’clock, where organiser Amira handed out gloves, buckets and a safety briefing. The sky was overcast, but the tide was low and the sand was easy to search. First, we split into pairs and worked along the dune fence. My partner, Eli, spotted a tangle of fishing line near a clump of spinifex. We carefully freed it from the grass and placed it in a separate bag so it could be disposed of safely. Next, our group moved towards the rock pools. A gust of wind blew a paper cup towards the water, and we chased it before it reached the sea. By mid-morning, our buckets held bottle tops, wrappers and several pieces of plastic rope. We recorded what we found and sorted recyclable items from general waste. After we finished, Amira thanked everyone and showed us the full rubbish bags. The beach looked cleaner, but the amount of plastic was surprising. I felt tired and a little frustrated that so much litter had washed ashore. Even so, working together made a visible difference. I left determined to bring a reusable drink bottle and to join the next clean-up.
