Speaking and listening essentials

Choose the strongest response for each question. For the select-all question, choose every suitable strategy.

1.Jarrah-Mae is about to give a brief talk to her class. Which opening is most effective?

“Good morning. I’m going to explain how to plan a smooth train journey.”

Plan, practise and reflect

Use clear, concise language. The answers to the practice tasks are examples; other sensible responses are possible.

5.Plan a one-minute talk for classmates about making a train journey enjoyable and safe. Write three brief points: your main idea, one supporting example and a suitable closing thought.

6.During a train trip, Jarrah-Mae asks Jai for advice on revising for an upcoming test. Write three short lines Jai could say: acknowledge her concern, offer a practical suggestion and invite her to explain what she finds difficult.

7.Practise this sentence aloud: “Checking the timetable before we leave can save us time.” Write the key word or words you would emphasise to make the main message clear.

8.Prepare quick notes for a one-minute talk describing a memorable place in Australia you could visit by train. Include where it is, what someone might see or do there, and why a visitor might enjoy it.
