Saturday, 14 July I set my alarm for 5:45 am, but the kookaburras outside our cabin started laughing before it rang. I think they were laughing at my bed hair. After breakfast, we joined a small group walk near Nourlangie (Burrungkuy). Our guide, Chloe, is a Bininj woman. She explained that Bininj and Mungguy people have cared for Country in Kakadu for many generations. As we walked, she pointed out plants and rock features, sharing knowledge she was permitted to discuss with visitors. I listened carefully and learnt that this landscape is not just a beautiful place to visit; it is also home, history and culture. The path was steeper than I expected. Halfway up, I tried to look confident while stopping to catch my breath. My little brother announced that he was “just checking the view” every time he needed a rest. At the top, we looked across the floodplains, which stretched out in the morning light. I was glad we had taken our time. On the way back, I noticed how quiet I had become. The walk had made me curious about the place, but it had also reminded me to be a respectful visitor. I want to remember the view, the stories Chloe chose to share and the importance of listening. Journal extras: a photograph of the floodplains; a simple map of our walk; a quick sketch of the kookaburra outside our cabin.
