Character Bio-Poem Worksheet

A bio-poem uses carefully chosen details to help a reader understand a character. Read the short festival story and example, then plan and write a bio-poem about one of the characters. Use clues from the story, and make sensible inferences where the story does not tell you directly.

The last song at Harbour Lights

At the Harbour Lights music festival, Talia noticed that the small stage had gone quiet. The sound technician, Hugo, was checking a cable while the crowd waited. Aisha, a young singer, took a slow breath and stepped towards the microphone. “We can sing without the speakers,” she said. Hugo nodded and put his guitar aside. Talia began a steady beat on a festival drum, and the crowd joined in with claps. Aisha sang the final song without amplification. When it ended, the audience cheered. Hugo smiled at Aisha and said, “You helped everyone stay calm.” Aisha thanked Talia for starting the beat, then offered to help Hugo check the equipment before the next performance.

2.Write four traits that fit your chosen character. Include at least one trait you infer from what the character does.

3.Who is your character connected to in the story, and how? Name at least one relationship or connection.

4.What does your character care deeply about? Use a detail from the story to support your idea.

5.What might your character feel when the stage goes quiet? Give one feeling and explain what in the story supports your answer.

6.What might your character need at that moment? Choose a need that makes sense and explain why.

7.What does your character give to other people in the story? Describe an action or contribution.

8.What might your character fear or worry about during the festival? Make a reasonable inference and point to a clue.

9.Complete this bio-poem line for your character: “Would like to see …” Make it specific to the festival story.

10.Where is your character a resident, performer, or worker? Write a place or role connected to the story.

11.Put your ideas together as a bio-poem. Use these lines: first name; four traits; connected to; cares about; feels; needs; gives; fears or worries about; would like to see; resident of or role at. Your poem may use phrases rather than full sentences.

12.Choose one line from your poem and explain how a detail in the story helped you write it. Name the detail and the idea you inferred.
