Christmas is celebrated on 25th December each year by millions of people around the world. This special day celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ over 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem.

Many Christmas traditions we know today actually come from different countries and cultures. The Christmas tree tradition began in Germany hundreds of years ago. People would bring evergreen trees into their homes and decorate them with candles and small gifts. German settlers brought this tradition to other countries, including New Zealand.

Santa Claus is based on a real person called Saint Nicholas, who lived in Turkey about 1,700 years ago. He was known for secretly giving gifts to children and helping poor families. The modern image of Santa wearing red and white clothes was made popular by Coca-Cola advertisements in the 1930s.

In New Zealand, Christmas happens during summer, which makes it quite different from Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere. Many Kiwi families celebrate with barbecues on the beach, and some even go camping over the Christmas holidays. Despite the warm weather, many New Zealanders still enjoy traditional Christmas foods like roast turkey and Christmas pudding.

Here's a fun fact: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created in 1939 for a department store's Christmas promotion. The story became so popular that it was turned into a famous song and later a television special that children still watch today.
