Coaching Essentials Worksheet

You are planning a beginner-friendly small-sided football session for a mixed-ability group of 12 players aged 15–17. You have one assistant coach and 20 minutes. Use the information in each question. Give practical reasons for your choices; other well-justified answers may also be suitable.

Read the situation

The group includes confident players, complete beginners and two players who prefer lower-impact movement. The surface is a public artificial turf pitch. Your goal is to create an inclusive session that develops passing and communication while maintaining safety and enjoyment.

1.Write two observable learning outcomes for this 20-minute session. Each should describe something a player can do, rather than something the coach will explain.
2.Set up two practice zones. Divide the 12 players into two groups of six, with one group in each zone. After a short round, the groups swap zones. Suggest one way to organise a passing activity so all 12 players stay involved, then explain how this rotation could help the group.
3.Choose one specific adaptation to make the passing activity accessible to a player who needs lower-impact movement. Explain how the player can still work towards the same learning outcome.
4.Just before the session, you notice a loose section of turf near one boundary cone. What should you do before play starts, and what should you do if the hazard cannot be dealt with promptly?
5.You have 30 seconds to explain a new passing drill to beginners. Choose the clearest approach.
  • Give a long explanation of every possible rule before anyone moves.
  • Demonstrate the key action, explain one or two rules in plain language, then ask a player to repeat the instructions.
  • Call out instructions while the group starts playing and correct everyone at once.
  • Hand out written instructions and begin the drill without checking understanding.
6.During the game, a player mocks a teammate after a missed pass. Write what you would say or do immediately, and name one behaviour you should model yourself.
7.Create a timed outline with a warm-up, a passing activity, a small-sided game and a cool-down. Include one brief transition or water break if you think it is needed. Your timings must add to 20 minutes.
8.After three minutes, players are bunching around the ball and several have had few touches. State one change you would make and explain what evidence would tell you whether it helped.
9.Give one piece of evidence you could collect to judge whether the learning outcomes were met, and one question you could ask players at the end to evaluate their experience.
