Commonwealth Games 2026 Worksheet

Use the fact file and visitor data below to investigate the proposed 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Australia. Consider location, movement, impacts and whose perspectives matter. Answer in your own words where asked.

Fact file: Victoria and the Games

In 2023, Victoria withdrew as host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, citing a projected rise in costs. The information in this worksheet describes a planning scenario, not a confirmed event. Victoria lies in Australia's south-east. Melbourne is its capital, on the coast of Port Phillip Bay. The state includes dense urban areas, regional cities, farming districts and culturally significant Aboriginal Country. A major sporting event can bring visitors and investment, but it can also create public costs, travel emissions, disruption and pressure on housing or services. Outcomes depend on planning and on whose needs are included.

Planning scenario: visitor movements

A planning team estimates that 60,000 visitors will attend events over one day. Their proposed travel choices are shown below. These figures are a fictional scenario for analysis.

1.Multiple choice: Which statement best describes Victoria’s location?

A territory in northern Australia
An island country east of New Zealand
A state in western Australia

2.Use the fact file. Name Victoria’s capital city and describe its position in relation to the state’s coastline.

3.True or false: The 2026 Commonwealth Games are confirmed to be held in Victoria. Correct the statement if it is false.

4.Use the visitor travel data. What percentage are estimated to travel by public transport, and what percentage by private car?

5.Calculate how many of the 60,000 visitors are expected to walk or cycle. Show your calculation.

6.Complete the sentence: One possible environmental benefit of the proposed travel pattern is ; one possible environmental cost is .

7.Short response: Give one possible economic benefit and one possible economic cost for local communities if a large sporting event is hosted in Victoria.

8.Matching: Match each planning concern to the group or place that should be included in consultation.

Accessible routes and seating
Changes to trading and visitor demand
Transport changes and neighbourhood disruption

Disabled people and accessibility organisations
Traditional Owners and Aboriginal communities

Residents and local councils

9.Explain why using existing venues where possible could be a more sustainable choice than building many new venues. Include one possible limitation.

10.Evaluate the proposed travel plan. Identify one change that could reduce environmental impacts and explain how it might help. Use evidence from the visitor data.
