Cultural Paper Mâché Bowls

Design and make a small paper mâché bowl that communicates a personal connection to place, identity or a story you are comfortable sharing. Work in two stages: build the form today, then decorate it when it is fully dry. Use original patterns or motifs you have permission to use. Do not copy sacred, restricted or culturally specific designs without guidance and permission. You may instead develop abstract shapes, colours, textures or symbols from your own observations. Success means your bowl is stable, has an even layered surface, is labelled for drying and has a considered design plan.

Plan the build

Read each prompt carefully. Use the session brief to make decisions that are safe, practical and respectful.

1.You are preparing newspaper for a small bowl mould. Which strip size is easiest to curve around the form while still covering it efficiently?

2.Why should you squeeze excess paste from each strip before laying it on the mould?

3.Choose a sensible starting build for a small bowl that needs to become firm without getting unnecessarily soggy.

Apply 3–4 thin, overlapping layers, then let them dry fully before assessing whether more are needed
Apply one thick layer of paste and paper
Apply 10 layers in one go and put the bowl in an oven

4.Put these actions in a safe, workable order: label the mould; dip a strip; squeeze off extra paste; lay the strip on the mould.

5.Select every item that helps protect the work area or manage clean-up.

6.A classmate suggests copying a restricted design from another culture because it looks impressive. What is a respectful alternative?

9.Plan your bowl’s decoration. Describe one original symbol, shape or pattern, two colours, and what you want the design to communicate. Avoid copying designs you do not have permission to use.
