Complete each task carefully. Check that your letters are clear, sit on the line, and have even spaces between words. At the end, choose one skill to practise next.

Warm-up: steady strokes

Take your time and keep your pencil moving smoothly.

1.Trace each pattern once with your finger, then write it neatly on the lines: / / / / / ∩ ∩ ∩ ∩ ∩ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○. Keep the marks a similar size and distance apart.

2.Copy this sentence in your neatest handwriting: “A small kiwi bird explores the silver fern.” Check that lowercase letters are a consistent size and tall letters reach above them.

The spacing challenge

Good spacing helps every reader follow your words.

3.Copy the sentence, leaving a clear finger-width gap between words: “We packed sandwiches before walking beside the lake.”

4.This sentence has no spaces: “thewindpushedthecloudsoverthehills”. Rewrite it with spaces between the words and a full stop at the end.

5.Circle the more readable version, then explain one clue that helped you decide: A) “thedogranfast” B) “The dog ran fast.”

Letter-forming mission

Look closely at letter shapes and where they begin and end.

6.Write these lowercase letters carefully, keeping their size consistent: a a a m m m g g g t t t. Notice that g has a part below the line and t has a tall stem.

7.Rewrite this sentence with the capital letters fixed: “on friday, maya and leo will visit wellington.”

8.Write the alphabet in lowercase, from a to z. Keep the letters clear and leave a small space between each one.
