Mythical Creatures Reading Comprehension
📖 Reading Passage: Mythical Creatures Around the World
Long ago, people from different cultures around the world told amazing stories about mythical creatures. These fantastic beings were part of ancient legends and traditions that were passed down from parents to children for thousands of years.
In China, people believed in powerful dragons that brought good luck and controlled the weather. Unlike the scary dragons in European stories, Chinese dragons were wise and helpful. They had long, snake-like bodies, four legs, and could fly through the clouds without wings. Chinese families still celebrate the dragon during their New Year festivals with colourful dragon dances.
From Scotland comes the legend of the unicorn, a beautiful white horse with a single, spiral horn on its forehead. Scottish people believed unicorns were pure and magical, and they chose the unicorn as their national animal. The horn was said to have healing powers and could purify poisoned water.
In Australia, Aboriginal people have told stories about the Rainbow Serpent for over 40,000 years. This enormous snake created rivers and mountains as it travelled across the land. The Rainbow Serpent brought both life-giving rain and dangerous floods, teaching people to respect the power of nature.
Greek mythology tells us about the Phoenix, a magnificent bird with brilliant red and gold feathers. When a Phoenix grew old, it would build a nest and burst into flames. From the ashes, a new young Phoenix would rise, symbolising new beginnings and hope.
These mythical creatures helped ancient people explain the mysteries of their world and taught important lessons about courage, wisdom, and respect for nature.
