NZ Weather Case Study

Use the case study and data below to investigate how a severe weather event affected Aotearoa New Zealand. Answer using evidence, and distinguish between weather (short-term conditions) and climate (long-term patterns).

Case file: Cyclone Gabrielle

In February 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle moved south-east across the North Island of New Zealand. The storm brought intense rain, strong winds and coastal waves. Saturated hillsides slipped, rivers rose and floodwater covered roads and farmland. Communities in Tairāwhiti, Hawke’s Bay, Auckland and other regions were affected. Some people evacuated, roads and bridges were damaged, and power and communications were disrupted. Emergency services, councils, iwi, community groups and volunteers supported people during the response and recovery. The event was caused by a particular storm system; climate change did not create Gabrielle, but a warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapour, increasing the potential for intense rainfall. The exact influence of climate change on any one storm requires scientific analysis.
