Persuasive Essay Drafting

Plan and draft a persuasive essay for the local library newsletter. The library is deciding whether to add a weekly after-school board-game club. Use the information below to build a clear argument, then write your own draft. You may support or oppose the club.

The proposal

A community library is considering a board-game club on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Children would play in small groups with a library helper. The club would be free. The library would need to set aside a room and buy some games. Families would need to arrange how children get home.

Plan a convincing argument

Choose your position: should the library start the club? Use reasons that fit your position. Linking words such as because, also, for example and however can help connect ideas.

1.Write a clear opinion statement about the proposed Wednesday board-game club. Include the word should or should not.

2.Which sentence gives a reason that supports starting the club? Choose one.

The library should start the club because children can practise taking turns and solving problems.
The club would meet on Wednesdays.
Some families need to arrange a way home.

3.Choose two useful linking words or phrases for connecting reasons and examples in a persuasive essay.
