Remember and practise

Coordinates are written (x, y). The x-coordinate tells you how far to move horizontally. The y-coordinate tells you how far to move vertically.

Start at the origin, (0, 0). Move across first, then up or down.

Worked example

To plot (4, 2), move 4 squares across to the right, then 2 squares up. Label the point (4, 2).

Plot points in all four quadrants

Positive x-values move right; negative x-values move left. Positive y-values move up; negative y-values move down.
