Applying Ratios

5.A mixture for an aquarium tank requires salt solution and water in the ratio 2:9. A smaller tank needs 33 litres altogether. How many litres of salt solution and water are needed?

6.An aquarium team recorded 15 successful feedings and 10 missed feedings. Write the successes-to-misses ratio in simplest form, then give the fraction of all recorded feedings that were successful and the fraction that were missed.

7.A cleaning solution is made by mixing 3 parts concentrate with 8 parts water. If Nikau measures 420 mL of concentrate, how much water is needed, and what is the total volume?

8.A research boat travels 396 km using 33 L of fuel. Write the kilometres-to-litres ratio in simplest form, then calculate its distance per litre.

Problem Solving

9.Three species of fish are counted in a tank in the ratio 2:3:7. There are 96 fish in total. How many fish of each species are there, in the same order as the ratio?

10.Explain how a ratio can be converted into fractions of a whole. Include a numerical example and show how you know the fractions make one whole.

11.Extension: An aquarium filter medium is blended from carbon, sand, and ceramic in the ratio 2:3:7. A batch has a total volume of 24 m³. Carbon costs $135 per cubic metre. What is the cost of the carbon in the batch?
