Science Poetry Assessment Rubric

I am learning to use vivid language and poetic devices to express a science idea. Read the rubric, then use the reflection questions to review your poem.

Poetry toolkit

Imagery appeals to the senses. A simile compares using “like” or “as”; a metaphor says one thing is another. Other useful devices include alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification and repetition.

Assessment rubric

Use the descriptions to identify what is working well and choose a next step. “Emerging” through “Exceeding” describe a range of achievement, not a score.

Reflect on your science poem

Answer using details from your own poem. There is no single correct personal response; explain your choices with examples.

1.Which line in your poem creates the clearest image in a reader’s mind? Copy it and explain which sense it appeals to.

2.Choose one simile or metaphor from your poem. What two things are being compared, and what idea does the comparison suggest?

3.Which science word did you choose carefully? Explain what it means in your poem and why a less precise word would not work as well.

4.Name one poetic device you used deliberately. How does it affect the poem’s sound, mood or meaning?

5.After sharing or rereading your poem, name one part you would keep and one change you might make next. Explain your reasons.
