📖 What is Endangerment?

When an animal is endangered, it means there are very few of that animal left in the world. If we don't help them, they could become extinct — which means they disappear from Earth forever.

Scientists use special levels to describe how much danger an animal is in:

🟡 Vulnerable — The animal is at risk and numbers are dropping.
🟠 Endangered — The animal's numbers are very low and it needs help.
🔴 Critically Endangered — The animal is in serious danger of becoming extinct.

🐼 The Giant Panda

Giant pandas live in the forests of China. They were once critically endangered because their bamboo forests were being cut down and there were fewer than 1,000 left. Thanks to conservation efforts — like protecting their habitat and breeding programmes — panda numbers have slowly grown. They are now listed as vulnerable, which is great news!

🐢 The Sea Turtle

Sea turtles live in oceans around the world, including near New Zealand. They face dangers such as plastic pollution, fishing nets, and people collecting their eggs. Many species of sea turtle are endangered or critically endangered. Conservation groups work hard to protect nesting beaches and clean up oceans to give sea turtles a better chance of survival.

Why Does It Matter?

Every animal plays an important role in nature. When one animal disappears, it can affect many other plants and animals around it. Protecting endangered animals helps keep our planet healthy and balanced.
