A curious kea has found a shiny object near a walking track. Plan, draft, improve and share a short story about what happens next. You can use the organizer for a different story idea too.

Plan your ideas

Writers plan before drafting. Jot down key ideas; you do not need to write full sentences yet.

SETTING: Where and when does the story happen?

CHARACTER: Who is in the story? What are they like?

PROBLEM: What goes wrong or needs solving?

ENDING: How might the problem be solved?

1.Which problem will your story follow: the shiny object is stuck, it makes a strange sound, or your own idea? Write one clear sentence explaining what the character needs to do.

2.Number these writing steps from 1 to 5: edit, publish, plan, revise, draft.

3.Write two or three sentences to introduce your character and setting. Try to include a detail that helps the reader picture the scene.

4.Improve this sentence by adding a detail about sound, sight or feeling: “Kiri found an object.”

5.Rewrite this sentence with capital letters and punctuation fixed: “kiri called to the tūī where is the shiny thing”

6.Tick the checks you should make when editing a story. Select all that apply.

Each sentence begins with a capital letter.
Full stops or other end punctuation are included.
The events make sense in order.
Every sentence must be exactly the same length.

7.Name one way you could share your finished story. Then name one change you could make after a partner reads it.
