Read the passage

On a windy Saturday, Maia and her brother Oliver visited the rocky beach with their grandad. Near the water, they spotted a small wooden box wedged between two rocks. It was damp, but its lid was shut tight. Grandad helped them lift the box onto a dry patch of sand. Inside, they found a notebook wrapped in a blue cloth. The notebook belonged to a local beach keeper, who had kept notes about what washed up on the beach and which birds visited the shore. Maia and Oliver carefully turned the pages, taking care not to tear them. A name and phone number were written on the first page. Grandad called the number, and the beach keeper soon arrived. She was delighted to have her notebook back. Before leaving, she showed the children how to spot a variable oystercatcher: look for its sunset-coloured bill and noticeably light-coloured lower legs. Maia and Oliver walked home talking about the birds they hoped to see next time.
