Year 3 Writing Assessment

Show what you can do as a writer. Read each task carefully. Use capital letters, full stops and other punctuation where they belong. For longer writing, plan your ideas and reread your work.

Build strong sentences

Write sentences that are clear and interesting.

1.A story begins with a cat sneaking into a garden. Choose the sentence that gives the reader the clearest picture.
  • The cat went outside.
  • The fluffy ginger cat crept silently past the tall, wet grass.
  • There was a cat in a place.
2.Make this sentence more interesting by adding a describing word and an action word: “The bird sat on the fence.”
3.Rewrite this sentence with the correct capital letter and punctuation: “where did my red kite go”
4.Add a joining word to complete the sentence. Choose because, but or and: “Ruben took her raincoat, the clouds looked dark.”

Describe a special discovery

Use details to help your reader imagine the place and what happens there.

5.Write three or four sentences describing the beach discovery. Include at least two describing words and one detail about a sound or feeling.
6.Choose the two details that would help a reader imagine a stormy afternoon.
  • Dark clouds rolled over the hills.
  • The wind rattled the windows.
  • The day was nice.
  • It was outside.

Plan and write a story

Make a story with a beginning, a problem and an ending.

Beginning: Who is there, and where are they?

Problem: What surprising thing happens?

Ending: How is the problem solved?

7.Choose one story starter and write a story of six to eight sentences. A: “When I opened the little wooden chest, something inside began to glow...” B: “The tiny door in the pōhutukawa tree swung open, and I heard...” Include a beginning, a problem and an ending.
8.Add a line of speech to your story. Use speech marks and a suitable punctuation mark. What might your character say?
9.True or false? A story ending should help the reader understand what happened to the problem.
TrueFalse
10.Reread your story. Write one change you made, or could make, to improve it. You could check punctuation, add a detail or choose a stronger word.
