Clouds and Tornadoes Comprehension
📚 Part 1: Read the passage and answer
Clouds come in many forms. Cumulus clouds are the familiar puffy, cotton‑wool shapes that usually indicate fair weather when they are small. Stratus clouds form low, grey sheets and can bring light drizzle. Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy streaks high in the sky made of ice crystals; they often signal that weather is changing. Nimbostratus (sometimes called nimbus) are thick, dark clouds that produce steady, prolonged rain.
Tornadoes are rapidly rotating columns of air that extend from a thunderstorm to the ground. They often form from powerful thunderstorms called supercells, when warm, moist air meets cool, dry air and strong wind shear causes rotation. The visible funnel is made of condensed water droplets plus dust and debris picked up from the ground. Tornado strength is measured on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale; higher numbers (for example EF5) indicate much more destructive winds than lower numbers (for example EF1). Meteorologists may issue watches and warnings when conditions are favourable or rotation is detected, even if a funnel is not yet visible. To stay safe, people should move to a small, windowless interior room on the lowest floor or to a sturdy shelter and protect their heads from flying debris.
