There are several main types of clouds that meteorologists observe. Cumulus clouds are the puffy, cotton-like clouds we often see on fair weather days. They typically indicate stable atmospheric conditions. Stratus clouds form in flat, grey layers that can cover the entire sky like a blanket, often bringing light rain or drizzle. The most dramatic are cumulonimbus clouds, which are tall, towering formations that can reach heights of 18,000 metres. These massive clouds are responsible for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and sometimes even tornadoes.
Weather patterns are influenced by air pressure systems. High-pressure areas, called anticyclones, generally bring clear, calm weather as air sinks downward and spreads outward. Low-pressure areas, or cyclones, occur when air rises, creating clouds and precipitation. The boundary between different air masses, called a front, often produces dramatic weather changes.
Modern meteorologists use sophisticated technology to predict weather. Weather satellites orbit Earth, taking photographs and measuring atmospheric conditions from space. Doppler radar can detect precipitation and wind patterns, helping forecasters track storms in real-time. Weather stations across the globe continuously monitor temperature, humidity, wind speed, and air pressure, sending this data to meteorological centres.
Computer models process millions of data points to create weather forecasts. However, the atmosphere is so complex that even with advanced technology, weather predictions become less accurate beyond seven to ten days. Small changes in atmospheric conditions can lead to dramatically different outcomes, which is why meteorologists speak in terms of probability rather than certainty when making long-range forecasts.
