📖 Model Short Story: The Little Stream's Helper

Emma loved walking to school through Willowbrook Park. Every morning, she would stop by the little stream that bubbled happily under the wooden bridge. The water was crystal clear, and tiny fish darted between the smooth pebbles.

But one Monday morning, something was terribly wrong. The stream looked murky and brown. Empty crisp packets floated on the surface, and a rusty tin can sat wedged between two rocks. The fish were nowhere to be seen.

"Oh no!" Emma gasped, kneeling beside the water. "What happened to you, little stream?"

Emma noticed a trail of litter leading from the nearby picnic area. Weekend visitors must have left their rubbish behind, and the wind had blown it straight into the water. Her heart felt heavy as she watched a plastic bottle bump against the muddy bank.

That evening, Emma talked to her mum about the problem. "I want to help the stream get better," she said. "But I can't clean it all by myself."

"Then let's not do it by ourselves," Mum smiled. "What if we asked others to help?"

The next day, Emma spoke to her teacher, Mrs. Patterson. Together, they planned a "Stream Clean-Up Saturday" for the whole class. Emma made colourful posters with pictures of happy fish and wrote: "Help Our Stream Sparkle Again!"

On Saturday morning, fifteen children arrived with their families, wearing wellington boots and carrying bin bags. Emma felt nervous as she explained what had happened to the stream, but everyone listened carefully.

"Right then," called out Jake's dad, rolling up his sleeves. "Let's get to work!"

For two hours, they collected litter from in and around the stream. Emma's friend Lily found six plastic bottles. Tom pulled out an old football that had been blocking the water flow. Even Emma's little brother helped by picking up sweet wrappers.

As they worked, the water began to run clearer. By lunchtime, you could see the bottom of the stream again. Emma held her breath and peered into the water.

"Look!" she whispered excitedly. Three small fish swam past, their silver scales glinting in the sunlight.

Mrs. Patterson suggested they make a sign asking visitors to take their litter home. Emma painted it bright green with blue letters: "Please Keep Our Stream Clean - The Fish Thank You!"

Now, every morning when Emma crosses the bridge, she smiles at the sparkling water. The fish have returned, and sometimes she even spots a blue dragonfly hovering above the surface. Best of all, she's learned that caring for nature is something everyone can do together.

Emma still checks on her stream every day, and it remains as clear and happy as ever.
