The snowy wood

Mara pushed open the wardrobe door and stepped past the hanging coats. Instead of finding the back panel, she felt cold air brush her face. Her boots crunched on snow. Tall fir trees stood around her, their branches heavy with white. Behind her, the wardrobe door glowed faintly in the dark wood. A small faun hurried towards her. He carried a red umbrella and wore a scarf wound twice around his neck. “You must be new here,” he said. “I’m Rowan. This is Narnia, and it has been winter for a very long time.” “Isn’t winter lovely?” Mara asked, looking at the sparkling snow. “Not when it never ends,” Rowan replied. “The river is frozen, and the trees have forgotten spring. The White Witch rules here. She promises treats to anyone who helps her, but her promises are not kind.” A sudden gust rattled the branches. Rowan looked worried. “We should find shelter before the storm reaches us.” Mara glanced back at the glowing wardrobe. She could go home safely, but Rowan seemed frightened and alone. She tightened her coat and followed him towards a little cave between the rocks.
