Oliver Twist Chapter One and Two

Read the original retelling below, then answer the questions. Use details from the passage to support your ideas. The retelling summarises events from Chapters One and Two; it is not Dickens’s original wording.

A child without a beginning

Oliver Twist is born in a poorhouse, in a room where the parish authorities have arranged for him to be delivered. His mother is a young woman, worn out by hardship. She is alone when she arrives. After looking at the baby, she asks to see him, kisses him, and dies. The doctor and the parish beadle, Mr Bumble, discuss the child as if he were an awkward problem to be dealt with. The doctor points out that the mother arrived alone and that no one knows who she was. Mr Bumble says that Oliver will be raised at the parish institution. The doctor remarks that the place is not especially kind to its young residents. Until Oliver is about nine years old, he is cared for by an older woman who receives a small payment from the parish. The arrangement is poorly supervised: the woman keeps much of the money for herself, while the children are inadequately fed and clothed. When Oliver is moved to the workhouse, he is washed, dressed in a rough uniform and given a number of other children for company. The children are hungry, and their guardians provide little comfort. After a time, Oliver needs a surname. Mr Bumble chooses names for parish children in alphabetical order, and “Twist” is the next name on his list. The name is less a family inheritance than an administrative label. Oliver has been given an identity by officials, but he has no knowledge of his parents or any protection from the system that controls his life.
