A Day at the Science Centre

On a bright Wednesday morning, Elsie and her classmates climbed aboard a coach for a visit to the science centre. Their teacher, Mr Green, gave everyone a partner card and asked them to keep it safe. At the centre, the group entered a hall filled with curious machines. A huge pendulum swung slowly above the floor, tracing a wide path through a tray of sand. Elsie watched its movement carefully while her friend Hollie drew what he saw in his notebook. A guide called Florence showed them a room of experiments. One table held magnets of different shapes. Elsie discovered that a magnet could pull a paper clip across the table, even when a sheet of paper lay between them. Hollie wondered aloud whether a thicker stack of paper would stop the pull. After a quick lunch, the class visited a planetarium. The room darkened, and stars appeared across the curved ceiling. Florence pointed out a bright red planet and explained that Mars has enormous volcanoes. Elsie had thought volcanoes only belonged on Earth, so she listened closely and wrote down the planet's name. Before leaving, everyone took part in a team challenge: build the tallest tower from paper and tape. Hollie's team made a wide base, while Elsie's group folded their paper into strong columns. Their tower stood tall, but wobbled whenever someone walked past. They added a little tape near the bottom, and it stayed upright. On the journey home, Elsie looked at the notes in her notebook. She was tired, but full of questions. She wanted to find out what other surprising things scientists had discovered.
