The Museum of Wonders

On a crisp Tuesday morning in October, Class 4B climbed excitedly onto the coach outside Maplewood Primary School. They were heading to the City Museum of Natural History — a trip they had been looking forward to for weeks. Miss Patel handed out clipboards and reminded everyone to stay with their partner.

The journey took forty-five minutes, and by the time the coach pulled into the car park, the children were buzzing with anticipation. As they stepped through the museum's enormous glass doors, a hush fell over the group. The entrance hall was breathtaking — a vast, domed ceiling stretched above them, and hanging from it was the skeleton of a blue whale, its bones gleaming white under the spotlights.

"It's massive," whispered Theo, craning his neck upwards. His partner, Amara, was already scribbling notes on her clipboard, her eyes wide with wonder.

Their guide, a cheerful woman called Dr. Singh, led them through several galleries. In the first, they saw fossils of creatures that had lived millions of years ago — ammonites, trilobites, and the enormous tooth of a Megalodon shark. Dr. Singh explained that the Megalodon was the largest predator ever to have lived in the ocean, reaching lengths of up to eighteen metres.

"That's longer than our school hall!" exclaimed Amara.

In the second gallery, the class gathered around a display of meteorites — rocks that had fallen from space. One of them, dark and pitted, was said to be over four billion years old. Theo reached out to touch it, then quickly pulled his hand back, worried he might damage something so ancient.

After lunch in the museum café, where most children chose a cheese toastie and a carton of juice, Miss Patel gathered the class for a quiz. The team that answered the most questions correctly would win a small prize. Amara's group won by a single point, and she punched the air in delight.

As the coach pulled away that evening, the children were tired but happy. Theo stared out of the window at the darkening sky, thinking about meteorites and ancient oceans. He had never felt so curious about the world before.
