Adjective Brainstorming Worksheet

An adjective describes a noun. It can tell you about size, colour, texture, or a feeling. For example: a tiny, silver, bumpy robot. Try to choose words that help a reader picture what you mean.

Collect and sort describing words

Write three adjectives in each group. You can use your own ideas. Some adjectives may fit more than one group.

SIZE Examples: enormous, narrow

COLOUR Examples: scarlet, pale

TEXTURE Examples: silky, prickly

FEELING OR MOOD Examples: cheerful, nervous

Brainstorm for a noun

For each noun, write adjectives from at least two different groups. There are many possible answers.

1.What adjectives could describe a tuatara? Include words from at least two groups, such as size, colour, or texture.
2.Imagine standing beside a New Zealand beach on a breezy day. Write two or more adjectives that could describe the beach.
3.What adjectives might describe a New Zealand bush track after rain? Write at least two.
4.Choose a noun from this worksheet. Write one adjective in te reo Māori that could describe it, if you know one. You may also write the English meaning.

Put adjectives into sentences

Choose a noun from the brainstorming section, or another noun you like. Use at least two adjectives in each sentence.

5.Write a sentence about a noun using two adjectives. Make sure the sentence tells the reader what the noun is like.
6.Write a second sentence using a different noun and at least two adjectives.
7.Write a third sentence with at least two adjectives. Try to help a reader imagine how the noun looks, feels, or sounds.
8.Rewrite one of your sentences as a simile. A simile compares things using like or as.
9.How confident do you feel about choosing adjectives? Select one: confident, mostly sure, or still practising.
10.Write one adjective you discovered or used today.
