Analytical Essay Structure

A community food bank is preparing a campaign about food waste. Use the short text below to practise building a clear analytical argument. Read each question carefully; some ask you to explain your reasoning.

The campaign text

Read this original campaign excerpt before answering Questions 1–4. At the end of each market day, boxes of perfectly edible food are often left behind. Meanwhile, some households struggle to put enough food on the table. A local food bank collects suitable surplus produce and shares it with people who need it. This system cannot solve every cause of food insecurity, but it can prevent good food from going to waste today. Markets should partner with food banks because regular donations reduce avoidable waste and help communities meet an immediate need.

Understand the structure

Identify what each part of an analytical essay does, then test your understanding against the campaign text.

1.Which option gives the usual overall structure of an analytical essay?
  • Introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion
  • Hook, quotation, personal story
  • Question, list of facts, final question
  • Title, evidence, bibliography
2.In the campaign excerpt, identify the sentence that states the writer’s main argument. Copy it, then name the two reasons it gives.
3.Match each essay part with its main purpose.
  • Introduction
  • Body paragraph
  • Conclusion
  • Pulls the argument together and leaves a final insight
  • Sets up the topic and presents the thesis
  • Develops one reason using evidence and analysis
4.The poster pairs a crate of fresh vegetables with a food-bank box and uses the headline “Good food. Shared well.” Describe one visual or wording choice and explain how it could support the campaign’s argument.
5.Choose the set of features that would make a body paragraph analytical and connected to a thesis.
  • A topic sentence, relevant evidence, explanation of how the evidence supports the point, and a link to the argument
  • A personal story, several unrelated facts, and a new topic
  • A quotation with no explanation and a repeated thesis
  • A list of opinions with no supporting detail
6.A student writes: “Food banks are useful.” Rewrite this as a more focused topic sentence for a body paragraph about how market donations reduce food waste.

Plan and strengthen an argument

A clear essay gives each paragraph a distinct job. Use the campaign argument to make a practical plan and evaluate possible evidence.

7.Plan three body paragraphs to support the campaign thesis. Give each paragraph a different focus: one about reducing waste, one about meeting an immediate need, and one about a limitation or condition of the proposal.
8.A writer includes this evidence: “The market donated 25 boxes of produce last week.” Add one or two sentences explaining how this evidence could support the thesis. Do not simply repeat the statistic.
9.True or false: “This evidence proves that food-bank partnerships solve every cause of food insecurity.” Use the campaign excerpt to explain your answer.
10.Write two or three sentences for a conclusion to this argument. Restate the thesis in fresh words, bring the main reasons together, and finish with a relevant final insight. Do not introduce new evidence.
11.A student ends an essay with: “Also, markets should buy more refrigerators, and here is a new survey that proves it.” Explain why this is a weak conclusion for the campaign argument and suggest one better move.
