Animal Information Report Writing

Read the fact file, investigate how a report is organised, then plan and write your own animal information report. Use facts, clear sentences and the checklist to edit your work.

Read this fact file

THE KEA The kea is a large parrot native to Aotearoa New Zealand. It lives in the South Island’s mountain areas, including forests and rocky slopes. A kea has olive-green feathers, orange feathers under its wings, a strong curved beak and clever, curious behaviour. Kea eat plants, seeds, berries and insects. They may also search for food scraps near people, so visitors should keep their food and rubbish secure. Kea are well known for exploring objects with their beaks. These intelligent birds are adapted to life in a changing mountain environment.

1.From the fact file, write one fact about where kea live and one fact about what they eat.
2.Which sentence gives a clear fact in an information report?
  • Kea are the funniest birds ever!
  • Kea have olive-green feathers and orange feathers under their wings.
  • I saw a bird once and it was cool.
3.Match each report part to the information it usually contains.
  • Opening
  • Description
  • Ending
  • Gives facts such as habitat, appearance and diet
  • Finishes with a final fact or summary
  • Introduces the animal and its group
4.Complete the sentence using a fact from the text: “A kea is a parrot that lives in .”
5.Join these ideas into one sentence using “and”: Kea have strong curved beaks. Kea explore objects with their beaks.
6.In the sentence “Kea are the most amazing birds in the world,” is “the most amazing” a fact or an opinion? Explain briefly.

Plan your own animal report

Choose an animal you know about. You may choose a New Zealand animal or another animal. Use books you already know, your own knowledge or reliable facts provided by your teacher; do not guess facts.

7.Write your animal’s name, where it lives, what it looks like and what it eats. Add one interesting fact.
8.Introduce your animal and tell what kind of animal it is. Example: “The kea is a large parrot native to Aotearoa New Zealand.”
9.Write a short report with a title, an opening, at least three fact sentences and an ending. Include details about habitat, appearance and diet where you can. Use joining words such as “and”, “but” or “because”.
10.Read your report again. Check that you have used facts, started sentences with capital letters, used full stops or question marks, and checked tricky spelling. Write one change you made or would make.
