Biography Planning Worksheet

Choose a person whose life you can research using reliable sources. Gather accurate notes, then organise them into a plan for a biography. Use keywords rather than copying whole sentences. You may choose a person from Aotearoa New Zealand or anywhere else.

Choose your subject

A strong biography tells how a real person’s experiences, choices and achievements shaped their life and affected others.

1.Who will your biography be about? Write their name and a brief reason you chose them.
2.Write one focused inquiry question to guide your research. It should ask more than just when or where the person was born.
3.Which details belong in a biography? Select all that apply.
  • Important events from the person’s life
  • The writer’s invented version of what the person thought
  • Achievements supported by reliable sources
  • How the person’s actions affected others

Gather and sort evidence

Record facts in your own words. Note where each fact came from so you can check it and give credit in your finished biography.

4.Plan the person’s early-life paragraph. Note two facts about their childhood, family, education or community, and name the source for each.
5.Choose two important events or achievements. For each, note what happened and why it mattered.
6.A source says, “She was born in 1907. Later, she became the first woman to lead the expedition.” Rewrite the information as brief notes rather than copying the source’s sentences.
7.What challenge, barrier or setback did your subject face? Note how they responded, and avoid guessing about feelings unless a source supports it.
8.Match each linking phrase to the job it can do in a biography.
  • During her early years,
  • As a result,
  • In later life,
  • shows a consequence
  • introduces background or a time period
  • signals what happened afterwards

Shape your biography

A clear biography usually moves through time, while explaining why key events matter. Use your notes to plan a beginning, middle and ending.

9.Put these biography sections in a sensible order by writing 1, 2, 3 and 4 beside them: lasting impact; early life; major achievements; introduction.
10.Draft an opening sentence that names your subject and gives a clear reason they are significant. Keep it factual and engaging.
11.Plan a concluding thought: what is the person remembered for, and what lasting impact should readers understand? Use a fact from your research.
12.Before drafting, check your plan. Write two things you will do to make the biography accurate and easy to follow.
