Book Response Writing

Read the original story below, then complete the response tasks. Use details from the story to support your ideas. There is no single correct opinion, but your answers should make sense.

The Windy-Day Plan

Mila and her cousin Finn had planned a picnic beside the river. They packed cheese sandwiches, apples and a small kite. But when they reached the riverbank, gusts of wind tugged at their jackets and whipped leaves across the path. “Let’s fly the kite!” said Finn. He ran into the open field. The kite bounced once, then dragged along the grass. Its tail had caught on a thorny branch. Mila carefully freed the tail. She noticed that one of the kite’s paper corners had torn. “We can’t fly it like this,” she said. Finn frowned. He had been looking forward to the kite all morning. Mila took a square of bright red paper from the picnic bag. Together, they patched the tear with tape. Then they moved away from the trees and held the kite into the wind. This time, it soared above the field, its red tail streaming behind it. When the wind grew too strong, Finn reeled the kite in. The cousins ate their picnic under a sheltered bridge instead. “Not the plan we started with,” Mila said, “but still a good day.” Finn grinned. “Next time, we’ll bring extra tape!”
