Catholic Church Role Cards

It is the late Middle Ages in western Europe. The Catholic Church is part of everyday life, but its influence is not limited to worship. Read the role cards, then investigate how religious, political and community responsibilities could overlap. Use evidence from the cards in your answers.

Church role cards

Cut out the cards if you wish, or use them as a reference. A role could have more than one kind of influence.

THE POPE The head of the Catholic Church in western Europe. The pope led the Church and could influence rulers through religious authority. Popes sometimes supported or challenged kings, though their political power varied.

BISHOP A senior church leader responsible for a diocese, a district made up of many local parishes. Bishops supervised clergy and church affairs. Some also held land and advised or served rulers.

PARISH PRIEST A local clergyman who led worship and religious ceremonies, such as baptisms and marriages. Parish priests taught Christian beliefs and offered spiritual guidance to people in their community.

MONK OR NUN A religious person who belonged to a community living by religious rules. Some monks and nuns copied or cared for manuscripts, taught, welcomed travellers, or helped care for the sick.

MONASTERY A community and place where monks or nuns lived and worshipped. Monasteries could hold land and provide hospitality, learning or care. The services offered differed between communities.

TITHE COLLECTOR A person who collected tithes or other dues owed to a church. A tithe was traditionally a share, often described as one-tenth, of a person’s produce or income. Collection and local practice varied.
