Coaching Reflection and Goals

Think about a coaching session you led or helped with. Use specific examples from what you said and did. If you have not coached a team yet, use the practice scenario in Question 1. Set goals you can check at your next session.

Review the session

Practice scenario: You have 12 minutes to coach a small group on passing in a team sport. Several players are confident, two are new to the skill, and one is waiting on the sideline. The group is sharing three balls. Use this scenario if you do not have a recent session to reflect on.

1.Choose one coaching role you relied on most. Give one example of something you did that shows this role.
2.Which coaching action would most quickly help the new players succeed while keeping the confident players involved? Choose one and explain why.
  • Give everyone the same difficult challenge straight away.
  • Demonstrate the pass, let new players practise at a shorter distance, and give confident players a target challenge.
  • Stop the activity and ask the confident players to coach the whole group.
  • Let players choose their own activity without further instruction.
3.Write one specific example of feedback you could give after a player sends a pass too high. Make it constructive and useful for the next attempt.
4.Identify one safety or inclusion issue in the practice scenario. State one action you would take before or during the activity to address it.
5.After your session, only half the group can explain the key passing cue. What is the most useful next step?
  • Repeat the same explanation more loudly.
  • Ask a quick check-for-understanding question, demonstrate the cue again, then let the group try it.
  • Move on because the activity has already started.
  • Tell the players who understand to finish the session for you.

Turn reflection into action

A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Make each goal small enough to practise and check at a real coaching session.

6.Improve this vague goal: “I will be a better coach.” Rewrite it as one SMART goal for your next coaching session. Include what you will do, how you will measure it and when you will do it.
7.Complete the SMART check for your goal: underline the action, circle the measure, and box the time limit. Which SMART part is still missing or weakest? Explain one way to strengthen it.
8.Plan an adjustment for a learner who finds the passing activity difficult. Name one change to the task, equipment, instruction or peer support, and explain how you would check whether it helped.
9.At the end of the next session, what evidence will you collect to decide whether your goal worked? Choose one measure and say what result would count as success.
10.Set a review point for your goal. State when you will review it and what you will do if the evidence shows you have not met it yet.
