Cross-Country Recount Writing

Read the recount, notice how it is built, then plan and write a recount of a cross-country event. You may write about a real event or use the practice scenario. Use past tense and put events in order.

Read the recount

The Hill Before the Finish Last Thursday, our Year 4 group took part in a cross-country run at the local sports park. The morning was cool, and the grass still sparkled with dew. I felt nervous as we gathered near the start line, but my friend Maia gave me an encouraging smile. First, the marshal raised a flag and we set off along the flat path. I began too quickly, so after the first bend I slowed down and took steady breaths. Next, we ran beside a line of tall trees. Their leaves rustled above us, and I could hear shoes thudding on the track. The steep hill was the hardest part. My legs felt heavy, but I kept going one step at a time. Near the top, I spotted Maia waiting and cheering. Then the path curved downhill towards the finish. I crossed the line tired, muddy and grinning. Although I did not finish first, I was proud that I kept trying. On the way back, I decided that next time I would practise pacing myself.

1.What is the recount mainly about? Choose the best answer.
  • A child’s cross-country run and how it felt
  • How to build a running track
  • A made-up race between animals
  • A list of sports equipment
2.Find one detail from the opening paragraph that tells when or where the event happened.
3.Match each recount part to its purpose.
  • Orientation
  • Events
  • Conclusion
  • Tells what happened in order
  • Shares a final thought or reflection
  • Introduces who, what, where or when
4.Which word signals that the next event is about to be told? Choose the best answer.
  • Although
  • Next
  • Proud
  • Because
5.The recount is mostly written in past tense. Copy one verb from it that shows this.
6.How did the writer feel near the start, and what helped? Use a detail from the recount.
7.Put these events in the order they happened by writing 1, 2, 3 and 4 beside them: crossed the finish line; slowed down after the first bend; ran beside tall trees; climbed the steep hill.

Plan your own recount

Use a real cross-country event you know, or invent a believable one. Make notes first; you can turn them into sentences later.

8.Plan your orientation: who took part, what happened, where was it, and when? You may invent details.
9.Note three events in the order they happened. Include one challenge or interesting moment.
10.Choose precise words for your recount. Write one action verb for running, one word that describes the setting, and one feeling word. Then use one of your words in a sentence.
11.Write your recount in paragraphs: an opening that sets the scene, events in order, and a conclusion with your thoughts or feelings. Include time words such as first, next, later or finally, and check that verbs stay in past tense.
12.Reread your recount. Copy one sentence that shows a feeling or personal reflection. If you did not include one, add a sentence first.
