Film Ending Draft Templates

Use the original ending below as your starting point. Plan and write a new ending that changes an important choice or outcome. You do not need to know or watch any film to complete this worksheet.

The film: The Last Signal

In this fictional adventure film, a storm has damaged the lighthouse on a rocky island. Mara, a young apprentice keeper, discovers that the warning lamp has stopped working just as a passenger ferry approaches the reef. She has one working flare. Her cautious friend Eli wants her to wait for the rescue boat; Mara believes she must act now. In the original ending, Mara fires the flare, the ferry turns safely away, and the rescue boat arrives. The lighthouse remains dark, and Mara wonders whether she acted bravely or simply got lucky.

Plan a different ending

Choose a turning point: change a decision, reveal new information, or alter the result. Keep the characters recognisable, but let your choices reshape what the story means.

1.In the original ending, what does Mara do with the flare, and what immediate effect does this have on the ferry?

2.Which change would most clearly create a different ending? Choose one, then explain how it changes the story: Mara saves the flare; Eli discovers a working signal lamp; the ferry crew spots the island's bell tower; or invent another change.

3.The original ending says Mara wonders whether she was brave or lucky. In your version, will the outcome depend mostly on Mara's choices, circumstances beyond her control, or a mixture? Explain what detail will show this.

5.Choose one object or sound to carry a deeper meaning in your ending: the flare, the lighthouse lens, the storm bell, or another detail. What might it symbolise, and where will you include it?

Draft the scene

Write a complete alternate ending of about 200–300 words. Begin near the moment Mara must act. Build tension, include a meaningful choice, and finish with an image or line that leaves the audience thinking.

6.Draft 200–300 words. Use paragraphs, purposeful description and at least one line of dialogue. Your ending must change an important event from the original and show how that change affects Mara.

7.Choose one moment in your draft to slow down with short sentences, and one moment to move quickly with a longer sentence. Copy or describe each moment and explain the effect you want.

8.Write one detail you could add earlier in the scene to hint at your ending without giving it away. Explain how it acts as foreshadowing.

Revise and reflect

Reread your draft. Improve one craft choice, then explain how your new ending changes the story's message.

9.Copy one sentence from your draft that tells the reader what a character feels. Rewrite it using an action, image or sound to imply that feeling instead.

10.Compared with the original ending, what does your version suggest about courage, fate or free will? Refer to one specific decision or event in your draft.
