Future Historians Diary Entries

Imagine you are a child living in Australia in the year 2125. Future historians want to know what an ordinary day was like. Plan and write a diary entry that tells them about one surprising event. Use your own ideas, or choose from the story clues below.

Gather your story clues

Pick details that will help your diary feel real. Your character can be anyone you invent.

1.Choose one surprising event for your diary. What happened on this future Australian day?

A tiny robot delivered a lost lunchbox.
A visiting whale made the ferry stop for a while.
A sudden rain shower filled the school garden.
I invented a different surprising event.

2.Give your diary writer an ordinary first name and tell where they live, such as near a beach, in a city or in the country.

3.Choose two details your writer might notice. Circle two: warm sunshine, a noisy lorikeet, a smooth lunchbox, a salty sea breeze.

4.A diary tells about a writer's own day. Which sentence sounds like it belongs in a diary?

Jarrah watched the ferry glide across the water.
I watched the ferry glide across the water.
You can see a ferry from the beach.

5.Put these diary events in a sensible order by writing 1, 2 and 3: ___ I told my family what happened. ___ The robot brought my lunchbox. ___ I noticed my lunchbox was missing.

6.Improve this sentence by adding a describing word: “The robot carried my lunchbox.”

Write for the future

Use your clues to write a diary entry. Include the date, what happened first and next, and how you felt. Use “I” and “my” to tell it from your point of view.

7.Write your diary entry. Begin with “Dear Diary,” and finish with your name. Try to write at least four sentences.

8.Add a date to your diary entry. Choose a date in the future, such as 14 May 2125.

Draw the most surprising moment from your diary entry. Add one detail that helps a future historian understand your day.

9.Reread your diary. Copy one describing word or phrase that helps a reader picture what happened.

10.Why might a future historian enjoy reading your diary entry?
