Game Instructions Procedural Writing

Read the sample instructions, solve the editing challenges, then plan and write a game procedure of your own. Check that someone who has never played your game could follow it.

Read: Bush Track Dash

Aim: Be the first player to reach the finish. You need a board with a path of 20 squares, one counter for each player and one six-sided die. Make three squares “Go back 2” squares and two squares “Miss a turn” squares. How to play: 1. Place every counter on Start. 2. Roll the die; the player with the highest number goes first. 3. Take turns rolling the die and moving your counter forward that many squares. 4. Follow the instruction on any special square you land on. 5. If your roll would take you past square 20, stay where you are. 6. The first player to land exactly on Finish wins.

1.What is the main purpose of the Bush Track Dash instructions?
  • To explain how to play a game
  • To describe an Australian bushland
  • To persuade readers to buy a die
  • To tell a story about a race
2.Name two materials needed to play Bush Track Dash.
3.Find and write down three imperative verbs (command words) from the steps.
4.Which player goes first, and how do the instructions decide?
5.Put these actions in the order they happen during a turn: follow a special-square instruction; roll the die; move your counter.
6.A player is on square 18 and rolls a 4. What happens?
  • Move to Finish
  • Move to square 22
  • Stay on square 18
  • Go back 2 squares
7.The rule “If your roll would take you past square 20, stay where you are” is unclear to one player. Rewrite it in your own words without changing its meaning.

Plan your own game procedure

Invent a game or choose a familiar one. Make sure your rules are safe, fair and possible to follow.

8.Plan your game: write its title, aim, number of players and materials. Include enough detail for a new player to get ready.
9.Write four or more numbered steps explaining how to play your game. Use command verbs and sequencing words such as first, next, then and finally. Include how a turn works and how someone wins.
10.Swap-check your procedure: identify one step that might confuse a new player, then rewrite it to make it clearer.
