Habitat Characteristics Poster Project
Field note: A mangrove habitat
Mangroves grow along sheltered tropical and subtropical coastlines. Their roots are regularly covered by salty seawater at high tide and exposed at low tide. The muddy ground is low in oxygen, so some mangrove roots grow upwards to take in air. The tangled roots shelter young fish and prawns from larger predators. Crabs feed on fallen leaves, while birds may feed on crabs and fish. Mangroves also help hold muddy shorelines in place.
