Holiday Writing Brainstorm
Think of a real or imaginary holiday in Aotearoa New Zealand. Use the prompts to collect ideas, then turn your best ideas into a short, lively piece of writing.
Collect your ideas
Jot down details that will help a reader picture your holiday.
1.Where did your holiday take place? Name a real place or invent one, and add one detail about it.
2.Who was with you, and what did you do together?
3.Choose the weather that best fits your holiday. You may choose more than one.
- Bright and sunny
- Windy and blustery
- Cool and cloudy
- Rainy with puddles
- Warm with a gentle breeze
4.Write one sound, one smell and one thing you could see on this holiday.
5.Complete the sentence with a describing word: “The water splashed against the shore.”
6.What was the most exciting or surprising moment? Tell what happened.
Shape your writing
Use your notes to plan a beginning, a memorable moment and an ending.
7.Which opening would make a reader want to continue? Choose one, or write your own.
- At last, our holiday adventure began!
- I went somewhere.
- First, I got out of bed.
8.Draw the moment you most want your reader to imagine. Add at least two details from your brainstorm.
9.Write a short holiday paragraph. Include where you went, one thing you did and a detail that helps the reader see, hear or feel the place.
