Imaginative Texts Features

Read the short story, then investigate how its characters, setting, complication and resolution work together. Use evidence from the story when you can.

The Bottle at Breakwater Bay

On the last afternoon of the school holidays, Evie hurried along Breakwater Bay with her dog, Pepper. The wind tugged at her raincoat, and the tide was creeping towards the old jetty. Beneath a tangle of seaweed, Evie spotted a glass bottle. A tiny blue light blinked inside it. When Evie uncorked the bottle, a folded note fluttered out. It read: “The lighthouse lamp has gone dark. Find the silver key before the next high tide.” Evie glanced towards the lighthouse. Its windows were black, and a fishing boat was drifting closer to the rocks. Pepper sniffed around the jetty and pawed at a loose plank. Underneath lay a small silver key. Evie raced up the hill and found the lighthouse keeper waiting by the locked door. The key turned with a click. Together, they climbed the spiral stairs and lit the lamp just as the boat changed course towards the safe harbour. The keeper thanked Evie, but Pepper was already back on the beach, proudly carrying the empty bottle. Inside it, another blue light began to blink.
